Experiments with rhyme

Tags: | |

Last year i worked on a templating language and interpretive engine to generate text. The system functioned very similar to the way the Andrew Bulhak’s Dada text generation engine worked (similar grammar etc..). The Dada engine was responsible for the well known Postmodern Essay Generator. I’ve expanded on the functionality quite a bit to tie in with some code i’ve written the last little whlie to find rhymes for certain words. The rhyming engine has knowledge of 11 types of rhyme.

The system had a public debut of sorts at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s “fuse” event series (Oct 28th/2005 event). My friend Andrew Klobucar and I used the templating engine to generate text which was projected on the gallery walls and then sung by the performer Viviane Houle.

Below are some samples of 2 types of rhyme being used in 10 sentences. The grammar takes a “seed” word, a randomly selected noun, and then generates lists of words which rhyme with it to be used in the sentence templates. The first half of each sentence use “near” rhyme, the latter half of each sentence uses alliteration:

He loved nothing more than to slim the modem with an upstream rum and dreamed of the day he could reverse a richest reserved recuperation with a regalia.

He loved nothing more than to downgrade the blistering with a heating supplying and dreamed of the day he could sightsee a snowbound cerise smile with a cetus.

He loved nothing more than to cushion the frogmen with a risen join and dreamed of the day he could toenail a tentative transnational textile with t.

He loved nothing more than to daydream the lunchroom with an unwelcome flame and dreamed of the day he could grow a greased great gloom with grouper.

He loved nothing more than to disburse the edicts with a backless onomastics and dreamed of the day he could squelch a soluble saleable snob with a sandal.

He loved nothing more than to lave the directive with a conductive imperative and dreamed of the day he could flaw a fragrant familiar frothiness with a frisbee.

He loved nothing more than to intersperse isotopes with an assiduous knock and dreamed of the day he could glide a groaning go-cart globetrotter with a gallery.
